Injury Prevention Programs for Children Age 5-8
Safety Rodeo
IPR conducts nine Safety Rodeos serving 2,000 youth in kindergarten through third grade every year. The Safety Rodeos are held during the school day at each elementary school in Fremont County. By presenting the program during the school day we ensure that all students participate. Because of the strong partnership we have established with each of our local school districts, IPR is one of few outside agencies given this degree of access to students during the school day.
The primary purpose of the Safety Rodeos is to teach children and their parents what they can do to reduce the risk of injury to children in our community. The Safety Rodeos provide hands-on, interactive education for young children in the following areas:
* Emergency 911: when and how to call 9-1-1
* Fall Prevention: preventing falls in our homes and on the playground
* Fire Safety: smoke detectors, smoke alarms, Stop-Drop-and-Roll
* ATV Safety: safety techniques when riding and required protective gear
* Helmet Safety: how, when and why we need helmets
* Pedestrian Safety: safety rules and traffic signs
* Booster Seats and Safety Belts: who needs booster seats, safety belts and why
* Water Safety: pools, lakes, rivers and bathtubs
* Gun Safety: don`t touch - leave the area - tell an adult
* Electrical Safety: preventing electrical shock - kite flying and water risks
Each Safety Rodeo also includes a helmet fitting station (a helmet is provided at no cost to any child who needs one), bicycle safety inspection, a bicycle obstacle course, fire truck and ambulance tours, and this year will include a new Firehouse.
This school year (2009-2010) we presented the Safety Rodeo to 2,039 students grades K-3rd from 13 schools throughout Fremont County and gave out over 770 helmets.

The Firehouse is a 12’Wx20’Lx13’H inflatable building that has 3 rooms set up as if it were a home. The first room you walk into is the kitchen, it has a refrigerator and stove and this is where the safety presentation starts. The second room is a living room with a fire place and the third room is the “escape room” where there is a window that opens and allows the kids to jump out safely and land on an inflatable mattress outside the firehouse.
South Elementary School children have their bikes inspected and registered.
Ashgrove Elementary students exit safely through a back window of the firehouse.
Jackson Elementary School students are shown proper placement of a smoke alarm.
West Elementary School students are getting new helmets and receiving instruction on how to wear them correctly.
Wind River Elementary School students and volunteers enjoy the Safety Rodeo events.
A big Thank you to all our volunteers for making this a great Safety Rodeo for the students, parents and teachers, we couldn`t have done it without you.
